Cow Peas
Description
Cowpeas make for an excellent cover crop during warm weather and growers in southern regions of the US. Cowpeas are sensitive to frost, but establish fast in warm or hot weather, up to 2 1/2 inches. Sow this seed midspring, drilling 25 - 50 lbs/acre, or 120 lbs/acre broadcast, 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Long taproots help withstand drought. Cowpeas are susceptible to weed pressure or wet soil and will perform poorly under such conditions, however, planting thickly can help smother weeds.
Cowpeas can be used for under seeding in the spring and tilled under prior to crops planted in the fall. This crop can produce from 100 to 300 lbs/acre nitrogen.
